What’s happened so far?
In Spring 2024, adjuncts at SCA voted to form the AFA by a 94% yes vote, with over 82% participation. Shortly afterward, adjuncts elected a bargaining committee of 7 members to represent their diverse needs across all divisions. The committee surveyed all members on what is important to fight for and secure in our first contract, and have created an initial list of demands.
What are our next steps?
The bargaining committee will present the initial list of demands to all members for a two-day comment period, then they will be revised and all adjuncts will vote on whether or not to ratify them. Then the committee will begin to bargain with representatives of USC.
Will SCA Adjuncts be negotiating with SCA or USC?
SCA Adjuncts will be negotiating with USC, but members of SCA Administration may be present.
Who will negotiate the first contract?
The contract will be negotiated by the 7-adjunct bargaining committee elected by all AFA members. They will work closely with negotiators and lawyers from UAW who will advise them during the process.
What is the timeline for this first contract?
There is no set timeline for this process. At any point in this process, the sides could reach an agreement. It could be soon. It could take several months. For reference, the studios and the WGA reached an agreement in 188 days, and it took eight months for GSWOC, the USC Graduate Student Union, to ratify their contract.
